The Christmas Promise by Alison Mitchell & Catalina Echeverri

Book description:

A captivating retelling of the Christmas story showing how God kept His promise to send a new King. Superb illustrations by Catalina Echeverri and faithful, Bible-centered story-telling by Alison Mitchell combine to make this a book that both parents and children will love.
A long, long time ago so long that it’s hard to imagine God promised a new King. He wasn’t any ordinary king, like the ones we see on TV or in books. He would be different. He would be a new King; a rescuing King; a forever King!
This book helps pre-school children discover exactly how God kept His Christmas Promise.

My review:

I love the way this book gives young children the picture of the entire Christmas story in a way that is easy for them to understand.  I couldn’t find a recommended age range for the book, but I think it would be excellent for Pre-K or K as a read aloud.  The best part of the book is that the illustrations are bright and colorful enough to hold the interest of young children, while being read to by someone older.  I also think the arrangement of the font is great.  I can easily imagine young children tracing the words with their fingers as it swirls around on some of the pages.

I’ve read aloud my share of children’s books to children of varying ages at the same time and found that the biggest challenge is keeping the youngest one quiet and occupied and listening so the older one can understand what is going on in the story.  The beautiful pictures help hold the attention so that the truth of the story can shine through.

This is a lovely telling of the Christmas story that will introduce youngsters to the birth of Jesus.  They will learn of the shepherds and the wise men and how they traveled to see Jesus.  They will also learn of the angels that appeared to Mary and Joseph.  I love books like this where an idea is presented to children in a broad overview so that when they hear it again and again, they can add more details and a deeper understanding of what is happening.

If you are looking for a book to read to introduce children to the story of Christmas this Christmas season, this is a beautiful choice.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Cross Focused Reviews in exchange for my honest review.  All opinions are my own.
