Love & Respect in the Family by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

Dr. Eggerichs shares how he turned his biblical insights into G.U.I.D.E.S. to help families break the “Family Crazy Cycle” of conflict by helping parents demonstrate love to their children to increase the respect they desire, and helping children respect their parents to increase the love they need.

I liked this book very much.  I read a lot of parenting books, and this was one of the best I’ve read in a long time.  What made it so great for me is that it didn’t make me feel like a parenting failure.  Most parenting books seem to have it all figured out, and share their successes and how their methods work, etc.  It seems like they have it all together and have never lost their patience or gave into the frustration of the moment.  Dr. Eggerichs shares his parenting failures in a straight-forward manner and also shares his children’s perspective on his self-perceived failures.  I think it is a common feeling amongst parents that we are not as good at parenting as we should be.  I found Dr. Eggerichs’s book to be very reassuring.

I also found Dr. Eggerich’s approach of G.U.I.D.E.S. to be practical and easy to implement.  The acronym represents the concepts of Giving, Understanding, Instructing, Disciplining, Encouraging, and Supplicating.  In each chapter, Dr. Eggerich shares ideas on how to use them to facilitate the Family Energizing Cycle and defeat the Family Crazy Cycle.  I think the chapter on parental relationship is excellent as well.  Dr. Eggerich demonstrates how the concepts of love and respect are necessary and can be developed in every relationship.

Overall, this is an excellent book.  If you are looking for a practical parenting book that gives ideas on how to improve your parenting without making you feel like you’re a failure, this is the book for you.  I enjoyed it very much!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from BookSneeze in exchange for my honest review.  All opinions are my own.
