A few days before Christmas, Lauren Scruggs went up for a short plane ride in a friend’s plane to see Christmas lights. After landing, she walked into the plane’s propeller and suffered brain damage and lost her left eye and left hand. This book tells the story of her life before the accident and her journey through recovery after the accident.
I usually really enjoy these inspiring stories of individuals overcoming tragic accidents or situations. However, this one was just OK for me. It was a nice story and I enjoyed reading about how Lauren’s faith helped her cope with her injuries. I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had an idea of who Lauren was. The language of the book made it seem like I should know who Lauren is, but I had never heard of her before. She talked about getting get well wishes from Robin from Good Morning America and Guiliana Rancic, as well as headlines about her recovering, but I had never heard of her before. So throughout the book while I was reading, I was a little distracted by trying to figure out why she seemed like a celebrity that I didn’t know anything about.
Overall, this was a good book that I think a lot of people would enjoy. It shows a family that pulls together in a crisis like families should. I liked reading about how supportive they all were during Lolo’s recovery process, especially with her mood swings. It was nice to see the reconciliation of her parents. I probably would have enjoyed this book more if it was about a family’s journey instead of a personal journey. I also wish there were more pictures included.
If you are a fan of Lauren Scruggs, you will probably enjoy this book a lot more than I did. Also, if you or someone you know is facing a physically challenging injury, this book might help you be encouraged by someone who recovered from a devastating injury.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
