Treha Langsam is a special girl, misunderstood by a lot of people. From the outside, she seems a little odd because of her head and eye movements, and because of her special rapport with the elderly people at the assisted-living facility where she works. She is able to connect with even the lowest functioning, non-verbal residents, and calls them back to functioning, if only for a short time. The director of the facility, Miriam Howard, recognizes Treha’s gift and encourages her to spend time with the residents. However, Howard is stepping down and the new director doesn’t have the same appreciation for Treha. After a hungry documentary team discovers Treha’s gift, Howard, Treha, and the team begin a search to discover her past. What will they discover?
This is a great book! The setting of the assisted-living facility and the question of quality of life, is one not usually explored in novels. I love the way Fabry takes Treha’s character that others would overlook as being weird or different and demonstrates her gift. It is a powerful lesson to all of us that we need to look beneath the surface to the person within. Another great lesson in this book is that the elderly are worthy of dignity and our utmost respect and care. Such a very moving book!
However, it is not just the messages of this book that make it great. Fabry crafts a tale of intertwining plots that are equally developed and interesting. It is rare that a book offers subplots that are as interesting as the main plot line. Frequently when I am reading a book with various plots/subplots, I find myself impatiently waiting to get back to the most interesting of them. In this book, each plot line was equally interesting, especially as they intertwined together. Fabry skillfully crafts a mystery surrounding Treha, and teaches readers life lessons along the way. Excellent writing!
If you have a heart for the elderly or disabled, you will love this book. If you are a fan of mystery and wondering how the book will turn out, you will probably enjoy this book. I’ve read other books by Fabry and this is far and away my favorite! Give this one a try and you will not be disappointed!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
