Girls Uncovered by Joe S. McIlhaney, Jr., MD & Freda McKissic Bush, MD

McIlhaney and Bush address how the sexual culture of America has impacted girls and their families and continues to impact their lives and decisions they make.  They provide proof for their claims from various research studies and also statistics, some of which are truly shocking.  They also provide guidelines to help parents address these issues and advice for how parents can help their daughters journey through their adolescent and young adult years while making good choices.

Some of the information in this book, especially at the beginning should be common knowledge for anyone, such as the risks of unprotected sex resulting in sexually transmitted infections/diseases or pregnancy.  However, it is nice to have a reminder of all the stuff that is out there that we need to address with our daughters.

The part I enjoyed the most was the discussion of what happens in the brain when men and women are in physical contact with each other, whether it is in a hug, kiss, petting, or sex.  It helped me to understand the physiological reasons behind why people continue in damaging relationships, and gave me good information to share with my daughter.  I thought it was very interesting and relevant to today’s young people.

I also thought it was good that the authors included a chapter just for girls to read.  While I might be a little hesitant to hand this book over to my daughter to read, because some of it would not be appropriate for her, the chapter just for girls was perfect for her.

Probably because the authors are both doctors, the focus is on the physical reasons to protect our daughters from premature sexual activity, there wasn’t a lot of guidelines on moral reasons to abstain.  For that reason, I think this book has appeal for a lot of different people, not only for one particular religious group.  McIlhaney and Bush gave mostly medical reasons and used some case studies from their practices to prove their points, in addition to citing research studies.

At first I was afraid this book was going to be rather dry, but I found it to be very interesting.  It should be required reading for high school health teachers because it is very enlightening.  I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a girl in their life that they want to see achieve their fullest potential.  It is a really good book on this topic!

I received a copy of this book from Moody Publishers in exchange for my honest review.  All opinions are my own.
