Jules is a book blogger who is trying to cope with her sadness after her police officer husband is killed in the line of duty. She has become so reclusive that when she goes missing, her father is the only one that is aware of it, but he is able to convince her husband’s best friend to investigate. It is not a spoiler to state that she was taken by her favorite author (that she had written a negative book review about), because it is the why that Gutteridge explores throughout the book.
This is the second book I’ve read by this author, the other one being Listen. I like the way she builds the characters and plot slowly, giving clues and snippets here and there, but waiting until the very end to tie everything together. This story takes so many twists and turns it is hard to predict what will happen next. Readers wonder, is Reagan good or evil? Is he going to kill Jules? Is he wanting to be a father figure? A mentor? It was difficult to anticipate what direction Gutteridge was going to take.
I think the title is interesting because the story reminds me of another story with a similar title where an author is taken and kept by a crazed fan. I was wondering while reading if Gutteridge was exploring that story from a different perspective.
Overall, an interesting book but not necessarily my favorite genre. If you are a fan of mysteries and suspense, you will probably like this book. Personally, out of the two books I’ve read by this author, I liked Listen better.
